This giant silver coin commemorates the 500-year anniversary of the fall of the Aztec empire. This thrilling high relief design displays a tribute to the former emperor known as Moctezuma II, or Montezuma II. This ruler was brought down by Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador.
However, Cortez already had alliances outside the city and imprisoned Montezuma II when he sensed there was a trap. The cause of Montezuma II's death is unclear. The Aztecs believed the Spanish assassinated him. Spanish records indicated the Aztec citizens did not respect their ruler after he submitted to the Spanish, and was killed as a result of their violent protest. Nevertheless, losing Montezuma II was the first step in the fall of the Aztec empire, which Cortez conquered in 1521.Manufactured with a special Multilayer Technique.
